The power of chamomile

Another study that proves the strong activity of plants grown in Latvia. In cooperation with LIAA and the Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia, we studied 6 different plants, of which chamomile, caraway and Topinambur (Jerusalem artichoke) stood out for their positive effect on skin cells:

  1. Among the tested extracts, the highest antioxidant activity was shown chamomile extract. This extract also contains the highest content of amino acids, phenolic acids, flavonoids and isoprenoids.
  2. Chamomile extract at a concentration of 0.5%, has a stimulating effect on the division of dermal fibroblasts, but when the concentration is increased, the extract shows a division-inhibiting effect. Evaluation of the chemical composition, antiradical activity and effect on cell division indicates the potential for using low (up to 0.5%) concentrations of chamomile extract in skin rejuvenating products.
  3. Caraway extract has a relatively high antioxidant activity and the ability to stimulate the division of dermal fibroblasts at concentrations of 1% and 2%. Lower concentrations of the analyzed compounds in the composition of the extract explain why, in the case of this extract, in order to ensure skin rejuvenating and protective effects, it is recommended to choose an extract concentration in the range of 1-2% for use in cosmetic products.
  4. Topinambur (Jerusalem artichoke) extract has the potential to promote cell division at low concentrations (0.5%). The positive effect does not persist when increasing the concentration. The effect of the low concentrations can be explained by the relatively high concentrations of specific topinambur compounds in the extract.

Project information:

On September 23, 2020, Ltd Rasa Botanicals and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia conclude agreement No. VP-L-2020/62 on receiving support for the evaluation of the chemical composition and biological activity of 6 new plant extracts and increasing competitiveness in the market by finding and studying the antiradical activity of plant extracts, their chemical composition and their effect on cell proliferation. Support is provided within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund project "Technology Transfer Program" (project identification number 1.2.1.2/16/1/001).
